Starter prompts

Paste one into ChatGPT or Claude once Footing Tools is added.

  • “Write a variation for two extra days of excavation on a job in Parramatta”

  • “Client wants to add a window to the kitchen. How do I charge for it?”

  • “Variation for rock found at 600mm: 2 days, 5t excavator, $1,450 a day”

What it won't do

  • Give legal advice or tell you what a clause means.
  • Price your work. The numbers are the ones you put in.
  • Decide whether something is a variation under your contract.

Templates and calculations only — not legal, financial, safety or professional advice. Check everything against your contract and the law, or get advice, before you rely on it. Footing isn't responsible for how it's used.

Straight answers

What should a variation include?

What's changing and why, the price with GST, the time it adds, and the client's sign-off. This template covers each of those, and the PDF has a place to sign. Your contract may ask for more.

Can my client sign it on their phone?

Yes. Open the document link and send it to your client. They can read and sign it from their phone, and you both keep the signed PDF.

Do I put prices in with or without GST?

Either. Tick “My prices include GST” if they do, and the template works the GST back out.

Is a variation template legal advice?

No. Templates and calculations, not legal advice. Your contract says how variations must be asked for and approved, so check it first.

Running more than a few jobs?

This makes one variation. Footing keeps every variation on the job, next to the quote, the budget and the claims, and your client sees what they approved in the client portal.
